Barbados Events to Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Fidel Castro

The Barbados- headquartered Caribbean Chapter of the International Network In Defense of Humanity, the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba and the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will be joining forces with the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) and with the University of the West Indies' Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Fidel Castro by staging two major public educational events in Barbados on Thursday 23rd, and Friday 24th February 2017.
The first of these events will be an International Panel Discussion on the theme of "Reflections on Fidel", scheduled to be held at the NUPW Auditorium, Dalkeith, St. Michael at 6PM on Thursday the 23rd of February.
The Panel will consist of outstanding scholars and activists from Cuba, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, US Virgin Islands, Canada and Barbados.
This event will also feature a performance by Barbados' Cultural Ambassador, Anthony Gabby Carter, and the presentation of a special award to Mr David Denny in appreciation of his long standing and exemplary solidarity with the Government and people of Cuba.
The second event consists of an all day Colloquium on "The Life and Contribution of Fidel Castro" which will be held at the Quadrangle, Faculty of Humanities, Cave Hill Campus of UWI ,commencing at 9AM on Friday 24th February 2017.
A team of international and local scholars will address such themes as:-
1. Who is Fidel Castro and why is he so important to us?
2. Jose Marti and Fidel's Revolution
3. Fidel's Cuba and the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean
4. Cuba and the African continent
5. National Sovereignty, anti-Imperialism and Independence in the Thought and Practice of Fidel Castro
6. The Cuban Political System: How it Works

Students and members of the public are invited to attend both of these events which are free of cost.
