XII LIBERTADOR PRIZE TO CRITICAL THINKING - 2016 edition

Dear Friend,

With my best wishes for 2017, I am pleased to make you aware that the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has opened the call to participate in the XII edition of the Libertador Prize for Critical Thinking. This prize seeks to recognize those works of critical thinking dedicated to the analysis of the reality of the contemporary world, in any of the fields of social activity and from the perspective that another better world is possible.


The bases of the competition are attached to this communication and can also be consulted on the websites: www.ministeriodelacultura.gob.ve / www.humanidadenred.org.ve


The participating works must be sent in number of seven (7) copies, before April 30, 2017, to the address indicated in the Bases. The author of the winning work will be awarded a representative sculptural piece, a diploma and the amount of 150 000 dollars, in a public act to be held in the city of Caracas.

XII LIBERTADOR PRIZE TO CRITICAL THINKING

2016 edition

The Ministry of Popular Power for Culture of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela hereby publishes the present international call for the Libertador Prize to Critical Thinking which will be governed by the following bases:


First It is understood by work of critical thinking, for the purposes of this call, to all written work that, in one way or another, from a position committed to the defense of humanity and from the perspective that the construction of another world is necessary, critically analyze the reality of the contemporary world, in a global or sectorial way, in any of the fields of social activity. Thus, war, peace, economics, politics, democracy, the relationship with nature, human rights, the rights of peoples, the integration of countries, racism, imperialism, are among other issues that can be the object of this exercise of critical thinking. Second

The prize will be awarded annually to the author of the best book published for the first time in Spanish during the year referred to in the call. The call admits books originally written or published in other languages, as long as the original edition does not precede in more than three years to the one of its publication in Spanish.


Third

The prize will consist of a small representative sculptural piece, designed for this purpose, the corresponding certificate or diploma, the amount of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars (US $ 150,000), free of taxes, and the publication of the work.


Fourth

The present call 2016, refers to books published during January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016.


Fifth

Books must be submitted directly or by registered mail (private or public) by its author, with the unrestricted authorization of the publisher in which they have been previously published. Books written by more than one author will be accepted and everybody can participate in this contest, no matter the place of the world where they reside.


Sixth

The works must be sent in seven (7) copies to the following address: Ministerio del Poder Popular para la Cultura de Venezuela. Red de Intelectuales, Artistas y Movimientos Sociales en Defensa de la Humanidad. Torre Norte del Centro Simón Bolívar, Piso 26. Código Postal 1010. Caracas, Venezuela. It must be aaccompanied by a communication clearly indicating the goal of wanting to participate in the Libertador Prize to Critical Thinking. The personal information of the author: first and last name, complete address, contact numbers, emails, as well as updated photo and curriculum summary will be included in the sending.

To make sure that your work will reach its destination, it is recommended to notify to premiolibertador2016@gmail.com that the same has been sent, attaching a copy of the receipt delivered by the postal service used.


Seventh

The deadline for the admission of participating works expires, for this call, on April 30, 2017. Works that have been mailed and postmarked on or before this date will be accepted. The list of participants will be made public on the website of the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela: www.ministeriodelacultura.gob.ve, as well as on the website of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity: www.humanidadenred.org.ve


Eighth

The jury will consist of five members, among whom there should be no more than two Venezuelans. The composition of the jury for the 2016 Call will be published on these web pages one month before the deadline for the assignment of works. The jury must produce its verdict during the last week of June, and will be accompanied with a reasoned judgment about the quality and importance of the winning work.


Ninth

The prize will be awarded by majority vote and cannot be divided or declared deserted. The jury can highlight with mentions, up to five of the participating works. It is established specifically for all the authors having previously obtained the Libertador Prize to Critical Thinking, that nothing prevent them for participating on this new call.


Tenth

The Prize will be presented to the winner at a public event in the City of Caracas, on a date that will be announced in due course.


Eleventh

The author of the work which wins the Libertador Prize to Critical Thinking will automatically grant permission to the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture to publish the work, as many times as necessary, in Venezuela, in the rest of Our America, as well as in other regions where their diffusion is considered relevant.


Twelfth

Participation in this call implies the acceptance, without reservations, of the present bases. What is not foreseen in them will be solved by the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
