Africa´s Day: Genuine Cause for Celebration in Cuba

Africa Day is cause for real celebration today in Cuba due to historical, cultural and cooperation existing between the island and the continent, where the solidarity movement with Cuba is active ties. In the context of the 130th anniversary of the abolition of slavery on the island, various activities have been developed to commemorate the May 25 date that honors each year the birth of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), advocate entity fair causes and regional claims.

Created on May 25, 1963, the OAU had as objectives to promote the unity and solidarity of the African states and eradicate colonialism and promote international cooperation.

On 9 July 2002 was replaced by the African Union (AU), which, composed of 54 states, collectively intended to address common challenges such as armed conflicts, the effects of climate change and poverty.

Despite organisational changes in regional dialogue and integration, on May 25 is celebrated as the Day of Africa, a turned-day national holiday in many nations of the region and others that assume and celebrate what unites them the so-called black continent.

One of these is Cuba, a country united to Africa by history, culture and solidarity cooperation programs.

To mark the date marked on Tuesday the University of Havana held a panel discussion in which academics, students and members of the diplomatic corps of African States represented in this capital discussed the history and contemporary continental.

In this area, the coordinator for Africa and Middle East of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Clara Pulido, thanked the countries of the region its historic pronouncement against the economic blockade that the US imposes on the Caribbean Island for more than half century.

Similarly, the official expressed the gratitude of the Cuban State for recognition made to members of the brigade medical Henry Reeve, who helped eliminate Ebola in countries like Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

In this regard, Pulido recalled the solidarity of Cuba early in confronting the epidemic, though, he stressed, "Our long time doctors were providing support beyond their internationalist".

Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and 2015, more than a million Cubans have served in more than 160 countries and about 30 thousand employees health, education, sports, science, construction and other specialties, have offered their services in several African countries.

These samples cooperative cultural ties, now have their maximum expression in the Greater Antilles, in addition to the idiosyncrasies of the people in institutions such as the "Casa Africa", the "Museum of San Severino father of add slave route "park" African Heroes "and the chair of" History of Africa "at the faculty of Philosophy at the University of Havana.

Likewise, Cuba and Africa share links in their struggles for independence and national sovereignty.

African fighters fought for the independence of the island against Spanish colonialism in the nineteenth century, and Cubans played an important role in the liberation processes developed in Africa years later, to create a society free of racism and discrimination.

That story in common, besides the cultural proximity and the value of Africanism in the consolidation of the Cuban identity, determines that this May 25 is assumed as a party Cuba itself.
